11 Smart Steps for Mobile Security

1. Look for the lock. Don't send personal information unless you see a lock and "https://" in the address bar of your browser.
   
   
2. Don't jailbreak your phone! Use apps from only your devices official app store (i.e., Google Play, AppStore).
   
   
3. Don't talk to strangers! Or at least proceed cautiously on unsolicited messages. And don't touch the links!
   
   
4. Avoid texting or emailing personal information.
   
   
5. Keep sensitive information in secured files. Yes, there's an app for that.
   
   
6. Lock your device. Set it to lock after timing out, too.

8. Take advantage of free malware apps and patches.
   
   
9. Use a Find-Your-Phone tool in case you lose your phone.
   
   
10. Use a remote wipe/lock app in case your phone is stolen.
    
    
11. Erase your data. Before returning, repairing, or selling your device, wipe the data from it. Contact your service provider for best practices around this.

One extra tip for Android users:

Make sure you're using Android 3.0 or later. This is the first version that incorporates file system encryption.
